Debord, writing a generation earlier, uses the term "spectacle" for the priority of image over reality in the media-intensive form of late capitalism.
Television was the means by which "the spectacle" could be extended into the private space of the home. Religion serves the spectacle, too, and its images can penetrate even more deeply. Shaved into the back of heads, tattooed on the body, printed on shirts -- most notably on the shirt Romeo borrows from the Friar before the fatal duel. In creating the Christian hyperreal, the art director brought so many images into the sacristy that the "real" priest became suspicious, and she had to explain that they were necessary to portray the faith and customs of another time.
